Memorial Day Safety
Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff of summer and is filled with pool time and barbeques, as well as a time to honor and remember those who served to protect our country. While you and your family are celebrating this holiday weekend, make sure that you pay attention to the potential dangers that can come along with all the fun in the sun. Here are a couple of tips to help you and your family stay safe this Memorial Day.
Grill: Both children and pets are attracted to the smell and sight of food cooking. Keep them at least three feet away from the grill while it is lit or hot.
Food: Make sure foods like onions, grapes, raisins and chocolate desserts are kept out of your pets’ reach. These are all toxic, and can even be fatal, for animals.
Water Safety: Children can drown in as little as one inch of water, so make sure someone supervises them at all times around any source of water.
Alcohol: Even a small amount of alcohol can be dangerous to children, so remove any empty or partially empty cups or glasses as soon as possible. Also, practice safe habits while drinking. Make sure you have a designated driver or arrange to stay overnight. And stay hydrated!
Sun Exposure: Children six months or younger should be kept out of direct sunlight. Everyone else should liberally apply sunscreen and limit exposure during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
