September is Mold Awareness Month

We can all identify mold on our bread, or on that mystery dish in the fridge that has been hiding out for a couple of months, but can we identify a mold problem in our home? Sometimes determining whether you have a mold problem in your home can be a lot harder than finding the spot on a piece of bread. Next time you wonder about mold in your home use these three indicators to determine if you may have a problem.

1. Know why mold grows: Mold growth is common in homes that have experienced water damage. Mold needs water to grow and microbial growth can begin in as little as 48 hours once water is present. Make sure you know if your home has experienced any of the following.

• Flood

• Sewer Back-up

• Overflowing Toilet

• Leaking Pipes

• Roof damage

• Leaking windows

• Humidifiers

• Other serious water related issues

2. Look: Check all areas of your home regularly for discolorations or smudges that do not wash away easily. Many of us have basements or guest rooms that are not visited daily or even weekly. Try to create a habit of entering those areas at least once a week to ensure you do not have any problems.

3. Smell: You may not always see mold, but you may smell it. If you have an area of your home with a distinct earthy or musty smell it is likely that mold is growing somewhere. The mold could be growing behind walls, underneath carpet, or in other hidden areas.
