Employee Appreciation Day 2016

Tomorrow, March 4, 2016, is Employee Appreciation Day. Since employee appreciation day is an unofficial holiday there are no real rules or guidelines on what should happen or how to celebrate. However, if you are a Boss and you want to show your team how much you appreciate them here are some easy ideas.

  • Treat your staff to breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon snack.

  • Host an office party.

  • Give your employees some of the day off. Everyone loves a half day, especially on a Friday!

  • Give out hand written thank you cards to your team, and maybe even throw in a gift card.

  • Take time to stop by each employee’s desk and tell them thank you for everything they do.

These are just a few of the simple things that you can do to show your team how much you appreciate them. Keeping in tone with all of our previous holiday blogs I thought it would be good to include a more creative and “punny” option to show employees that you care. Here are some ideas:

  • Bring everyone coffee and write on the coffee cup or attach tags that say, “Thanks a LATTE for all that you do”.

  • Leave some boxes of donuts in the breakroom with a sign that says “I DONUT know what we would do without you”. Leave some muffins in the breakroom with a sign that says, “We would be MUFFIN without you”.

  • Leave a Payday candy bar on everyone’s desk with a note that says, “You work so hard, you deserve another PAYDAY”. Leave a KitKat bar with a note that says, "Your deserve a BREAK from working so hard".

  • Fun size bags of chips with tags that say, “You’re all that and a bag of CHIPS”.

  • For the whole group you can stock the breakroom with some snacks. Put a bowl with gold wrapped candies like Rolos, Reeses, or Hershey’s gold nuggets and a sign that says, “We are so LUCKY to have you all”. Put a couple of packs of oreos with a sign that says, “It’s plain as BLACK and WHITE how much we appreciate you”. Even add in some fruit like apples that say, “You are awesome to the CORE”, or pears “We hope it’s a-PEAR-ant how much you’re appreciated”.

Finally, you can follow the lead of Michael Scott from the Office and create your very own office awards like he does on the show with the Dundie’s. Have certificates or trophies made and give out silly office awards. You can provide lunch and have the ceremony then, or make it an after hours event with cocktails and appetizers. Just make it fun!! Here are some ideas of silly awards that you can give out:

  • The “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere Award” for the person most eager to quit working each day.

  • The “Duct Tape Award” for the employee who seems to be able to fix anything in the office.

  • The “Loch Ness Award” for the employee who is least likely to be found.

  • The “Head in the Sand Award” for the employee who has no idea what’s going on around here.

  • The “Human Vulture Award” for the person who will eat anything they find lying around.

  • The “Caffeine Addict Award” for the person who drinks the most coffee.

  • The “Bermuda Triangle Award” for the person whose desk seems to make things disappear.

There are several more silly award ideas and I am sure that you could come up with plenty of them on your own. Get creative and do something fun for your team this employee appreciation day. Just make sure whether you come up with a big gesture or simply say thank you, that your employees know their hard work is appreciated.
